Karnataka makes Kannada compulsory subject in govt schools
Bengaluru, Mar 31 (IBNS): The Karnataka Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill to make Kannada a compulsory language in schools affiliated to the state board.
The bill, called Kannada Language Learning Bill, passed on Tuesday, is likely to hit those migrating from other states as Kannada will be a mandatory subject in classes one to ten.
The state government is also attempting to make Kannada the only medium of instruction at the primary level in government schools.
A second bill was passed to this effect which amended the relevant section of the Right to Education Act.
According to the Supreme Court, making Kannada the compulsory medium of instruction in primary classes may be difficult.
The apex court had even rejected a revision petition filed by the state government seeking a review of the ruling.
