Srinagar/UNI: Three soldiers were wounded in an ongoing gun battle in north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Thursday, police said.

They said the gun battle erupted at Malvan village of Baramulla during a cordon and a search operation in the area following an input about militant presence.

"As the joint team of forces cordoned the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists opened fire triggering a gunfight,"  a security official said.

Inspector General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar said three soldiers received minor injuries in the initial gunfight.

He said the operation is in progress.

The gun battle in Baramulla broke days after an independent Sarpanch was shot dead.

On Apr 15, Sarpanch Manzoor Ahmad Bangroo was shot dead at Goshbugh area of Pattan in Baramulla district.
