Srinagar, July 10 (IBNS): The death toll in the violent clashes in Kashmir rose to 16 on Sunday after the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani on Friday, reports said.

About 200 others have been injured in the violence.

Angry protesters set ablaze two police stations.

The clashes broke out between protesters and security forces on Saturday following Wani's killing.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday appealed for peace in the Kashmir Valley.

Singh tweeted: "Deeply anguished at the loss of precious lives in incidents of violence in Jammu &Kashmir. Also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured."

He wrote: "I appeal to the people of J&K to remain calm and maintain peace. Centre is working with the State govt. to bring normalcy in Kashmir valley."

Meanwhile the curfew remains in place in the Valley on Sunday as well.

The Holy Amarnath Yatra has been suspended for the second day.

Burhan was buried in his hometown Tral with nearly two lakh  people participating in the funeral procession. Witnesses said at least two militants fired pistol rounds in  the air to salute their fallen commander.

Reports said that the mourners were in lakhs and due to lack of ample space, thousands could not adjust themselves in the Eidgah for prayers. There were female folk mourning the death outside the Eidgah premises.

Wani, a 22-year-old commander of Kashmir's largest militant group HM, was killed along with two associates during a brief gun battle with government forces on Friday.

Authorities handed the body of Wani, viewed by locals as a hero since he joined the rebel group at the age of 15, over to his family on early Saturday morning.

Authorities imposed a curfew in large parts of the territory and suspended mobile networks and internet to prevent wide-scale demonstrations.

But thousands defied the restrictions as tensions intensified and clashes spread.

Government forced fired tear gas canisters and live ammunition at protesters in several places.

Additional Director General CID SM Sahai while addressing a press conference had said, “Following the killing of three militants in Verinag on Friday, violent clashes occurred in various parts of the Valley on Saturday. Unruly mobs attacked security forces, civil, police establishments and vital installations throughout the Valley.”

SM Sahai had said that 96 personnel were seriously injured as well.

"The police and security personnel used tear gas to disperse the crowds. At a couple of places, during crowd control ten people died,” he had said.
