Srinagar/UNI: Security forces called off an anti-militancy operation in a Srinagar locality after militants managed to escape, official sources said.

A brief encounter erupted in Chanpora area of Srinagar on Thursday evening when a team of joint forces launched a search and cordon operation.

“There was a brief exchange of fire when a cordon was being laid. No further contact could be established with the militants despite rigorous searches in the area,” the sources said, adding “the operation was later called off.”

They said the militants took advantage of the darkness and managed to flee.

Security forces are on a high alert in Srinagar and are keeping an eye on areas neighbouring Chanpora.
