Kolkata: 255 arrested for violating Coronavirus lockdown

Kolkata/IBNS: The Kolkata Police on Monday arrested 255 persons for defying lockdown, which has been enforced since last evening in Kolkata as well as other parts of West Bengal in the wake of COVID-19, officials said.

According to reports, by setting up naka check points at multiple locations and carrying out patrols across the city since the lockdown commenced, police, till Monday midnight, took 255 persons into its custody for violating the restrictions.

"We have arrested 255 persons for violating restriction order and they have been prosecuted under IPC section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant)," Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma said.

"I would like to appeal to all the citizens to stay at home and cooperate with the administration in combating Covid-19," Sharma added.

City police officials said that their drive to nab lockdown violators will be continued and strengthened.

A day after the country observed 14-hour 'Janata Curfew', the West Bengal government has put major parts of the state, including Kolkata, under lockdown since 5 pm on Monday till Mar 27 midnight as a precautionary measure against the spread of novel coronavirus.
