Kolkata/IBNS: A class 9 student died after being hit by an excavator in Kolkata's Bansdroni area on Wednesday morning, triggering a faceoff between the locals and police, media reports said.

The boy was hit by the excavator when he was on his way to tution class this morning. The accident happened near Dinesh Nagar auto stand.

The boy was rushed to the Bangur Hospital in Tollygunge by the locals. He was declared dead by the doctors.

Following the incident, a faceoff between the locals and police occurred as they clashed amid the heated exchange over the incident.

The locals demanded the presence of the local councillor and MLA, who are from the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Speaking to a local news channel, councillor of ward number 113, Anita Kar Majumder said, "The repair was underway after the underground drainage work. The incident was unfortunate. It should not have happened. We have to be careful that such incidents do not occur again."

However, the locals claim the repair work was going on for the last six years and blamed the deplorable situation of the road.
