Kolkata-Dhaka Maitree Express may resume service from March 26
Kolkata: The Kolkata-Dhaka Maitree Express is expected to resume its service from March 26, nearly two years after the suspension following the Covid-19 restrictions in both the neighbouring nations.
Sources told UNI the Indian Railways ministry already took the initiative and discussed the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs for resumption of the services from the last week of this month after the Bangladesh government expressed its willingness for restoration of Dhaka-Kolkata railway connectivity.
The service was suspended in March 2020 when the pandemic struck these two nations of this continent.
Besides the Maitree Express, which runs from Kolkata station to Dhaka and Dhaka to Kolkata, the Khulna bound Bondhan Express from Kolkata station via Petrapole Benapole and Dhaka bound Mitali Express from New Jalpaiguri via Changrabandha have been suspended.
However, for now, the Maitree Express is expected to chug off from Kolkata station on March 26, sources said.
They said the train is very popular among the Bangladesh nationals, who in hundreds come to Kolkata for treatment in this metropolis.
They said the two other trains Bandhan and Mitali express would also start running in phases as the concerned in India have taken initiatives and directed the Border Security Force (BSF) to arrange a security system in the international borders.
