Kolkata, Jun 30 (IBNS): Hanging body of a 19-year-old girl was found inside her room at Chowbaga Road area under Tiljala Police Station limits in south-east Kolkata on Friday late night, hours after her mother was pronounced dead in a city hospital, reports said.

According to reports, after breaking the lock of her room, local police found Uttara Chowdhury hanging from a ceiling fan at around 10:30 pm.

She was rushed to Chittaranjan National Medical College and Hospital where she was declared brought dead.

After completing preliminary investigation, police said that the teenager committed suicide.

"Prima facie indicates that Uttara Chowdhury, who was a first year student of city's Heramba Chandra College's commerce section, committed suicide," a senior official of the city police told IBNS.

Family members of the girl claimed that Uttara, who lost her father in 2014, went into depression after her mother was declared dead in a hospital on Friday evening and she locked her room from inside at 10 pm.

"Uttara was the only child of her parents and she had stopped talking to anyone since she came to know that her mother, who was undergoing treatment at a hospital in a critical condition, was no more," a member of Chowdhury family told IBNS.

"After losing both her beloved mom and dad, she went into a deep depression and committed suicide on Friday night," the family member added.

However, the family has not lodged any complaint with the police yet.

"A probe has been initiated into the unnatural death of the teenager while her body has been sent for post-mortem," a local police official said.
