Kolkata: Left Front holds protest march over JNU issue

| | Feb 21, 2016, at 07:52 pm
Kolkata, Feb 21 (IBNS): Protesting against the Centre's handling of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) row and demanding immediate release of jailed JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar, the Left Front (LF) on Sunday held a rally in Kolkata.
The rally started from Surendranath Park near Esplanade and concluded at Mahajati Sadan premise in the city.

Leaders of 13 Left parties, including CPI-M, CPI, RSP, AIFB, SUCI, CPIML (Liberation), and thousands of people joined the rally here.

LF chairman Biman Bose said, "Kanhaiya has become a victim of BJP, ABVP and RSS's conspiracy. BJP, who did not take part in India's freedom fighting, is unfortunately teaching us nationalism. We are condemning the incidents, which happened in JNU and Kolkata's Jadavpur University (JU)."

CPI-M West Bengal general secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra said, "BJP, ABVP and RSS are launching attacks on our democratic rights and freedom of speech. Kanhaiya said only those things which are written in India's constitution. We have to fight against such undemocratic forces like BJP and RSS. I would tell all our comrades to go forward, we are with you in this movement."

Currently, the JNU is facing protests and counter protests with the police cracking down on students over the anti-India slogans raised earlier to mark the death anniversary of Parliament Attack convict Afzal Guru on its campus in the national capital.
