Kolkata: Police take legal step against Deshapriya Park puja committee

Kolkata, Oct 19 (IBNS): The Kolkata Police on Sunday night took legal step against Deshapriya Park Durga Puja committee for ignoring the Calcutta High Court's guidelines and non-cooperating with the police, reports said on Monday.
According to reports, police lodged an FIR on Sunday night against the Puja committee at Lake Police Station under bailable IPC section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) on Suo Motto basis.

Deshapriya Park was overcrowded on Sunday evening when a huge number of worshippers came to witness World's tallest 88.5 feet Durga idol. Organizers and police failed to control the crowd and 11 worshippers including 2 children were injured during a tussle among the viewers. A near stampede-like-situation was also created there. No casualty was reported in the incident.

Traffic in south Kolkata was completely disrupted for hours.

Police immediately closed worshippers access into Deshapriya Park puja pandal indefinitely and took the legal action later.

Meanwhile, the puja committee and Kolkata Police blamed each other for the mismanagement.

One organizer of Deshapriya Park Durga Puja told IBNS: "From the beginning, we are cooperating with the police and we got all permissions to conduct the Puja here. Police failed to manage the crowd here yesterday."

Commissioner of Kolkata Police Surajit Kar Purakayastha said, "The Puja committee did not follow the terms and conditions properly. Only for Deshapriya Park's Durga Puja, whole south Kolkata was effected. Their arrangement was not sufficient. Our security arrangement was good. 200 policemen were deployed to the particular Puja pandal."

Police force have been posted in front of every gate on Deshapriya Park.

Deshapriya Park Durga Puja committee has decided to stop playing all advertisements in TV, Radio and internet. The committee are also removing all promotional display hoardings from the entire city.

However, like Sunday night many worshippers visited Deshapriya Park on Monday and left the place without witnessing the largest idol.
