Kolkata Press Club holds protest rally against attacks on journalists

Kolkata, Oct 5 (IBNS): The Kolkata Press Club on Monday held a rally here in the city to protest against the attacks on journalists during West Bengal municipal elections' coverage on Saturday.

Several journalists joined the rally.

According to reports, twenty- one journalists, photojournalists and cameramen of few Kolkata-based media houses were attacked in Kolkata's Salt Lake area and at Bali area in Howrah district during the coverage of municipal polls on Saturday.

Sustaining serious injuries, few journalists are still being treated in hospitals.

After 48 hours of the attacks, police arrested three TMC workers- Gopal Raut, Bittu Das and Asish Das- in connection with the attacks on journalists. They were produced in the court and sent to police custody till Oct 9.

According to police reports, none of them is a resident of Bidhannagar municipal corporation area.

Meanwhile, after receiving complaints from the oppositions, state election commissioner Susanta Ranjan Upadhyaya on Monday decided to postpone the counting of the polls to Oct 9, which was scheduled for Oct 7. The commission will also arrange re-polls in few booths in Bidhannagar, Howrah and Asansol on Oct 8.

Meanwhile, Ujjal Mukherjee (31), one polling agent of CPI-M candidate for Ward 37 in Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation election was found dead on railway track near Ultadanga railway station in Kolkata on Monday morning.

Police have started investigation into the case.
