Kolkata witnesses two-day taxi strike
Demanding hike in fare and protesting against the alleged persecution by traffic police, the Kolkata Taxi Operators' Union and West Bengal Taxi Operators' Co-ordination Committee have called the strike jointly on Monday and Tuesday.
Few labours' organizations, including CITU, AITUC, INTUC and AICCTU, have supported the strike.
Very few taxis are being found since morning at several important places in Kolkata, including Howrah Station, Sealdah Station, Kolkata Station and Esplanade, and commuters are suffering a lot.
Leaders of these organizations have said the strike will be withdrawn if the state Transport department issues them an written assurance to fulfill their demands.
