Kozhikode:Man arrested for pronouncing 'talaq' thrice to his wife

Kozhikode, Aug 17 (UNI) A man was arrested by Thamaraserry police for pronouncing 'talaq' thrice to his wife.

The arrest was based on the Narendra Modi government's 'the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage )' Bill.


This is the first-ever arrest in Kerala since the passage of Triple Talaq bill in Parliament.


According to the bill, an instant talaq in any form---spoken, in writing or electronically is illegal and void.


The man E K Esam's wife had approached the court alleging initiation of divorce formalities by the accused by pronouncing "talaq" thrice.


Citing the new law, the Court had ordered legal action against the accused.
