Maldives engages top human rights lawyer Amal Clooney to fight the cause of Rohingya Muslims at World Court

Male/IBNS: Maldives has hired leading human rights lawyer Amal Clooney to fight the rights of the persecuted Rohingya Muslims at the International Court of Justice(ICJ), media reports said on Wednesday.

The Maldives has joined the efforts of, mainly Muslim African nation, The Gambia against the 2017-crackdown on Rohingya Muslims by Myanmar which compelled around 740,000 Rohingya to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh.

The ICJ, last month, ordered Buddhist-majority Myanmar to implement emergency measures to prevent persecution of the Rohingya Muslims, including rape, murder, and destruction of their homes and villages.

In a unanimous decision, the court had ruled that it has the power to consider a case of genocide against Myanmar by issuing 'international legal obligations' on it.

The Gambia is acting on behalf of Organisation of Islamic Corporation, a conglomerate of 57 nations, urged the court to issue orders to Myanmar to halt the 'ongoing genocidal actions'.
