Mamata Banerjee celebrates World Environment Day
Banerjee said she visited the Jaldapara National Park in North Bengal.
Posting her pictures of celebrating the occasion, Banerjee wrote on her Facebook page: "Today is World Environment Day.Environment is the most important resource for life. We draw more, than give back to nature and environment."
"To save our very existence, we need to save earth, trees, water, sea, river, all water bodies and keep the air clean to prevent global warming. This is necessary for a sustainable environment. Let us all strive towards this goal for our better tomorrow," she said.
"Incidentally, today I am in the midst of lush green forest cover at Jaldapara National Park in North Bengal. The greeneries, captivating flora and fauna, beautiful elephants, rhinos, the fast flowing streams and above all, the warmth of the people around, have left me spell-bound," Banerjee said.
"I have two meetings today – Tribal Advisory Council and Uttar Banga Unnayan Parishad. Lastly, I will join a ‘Tree Plantation’ programme at Hollong," she said.
In Kolkata, the day was observed as people participated in rallies and other events across the city.
Kolkata's iconic Victoria Memorial was drenched in green light fort the fifth year in succession to mark the day.
