New Delhi, Mar 9(IBNS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought financial assistance for the cash-strapped state.

Reports said Modi said the state would stand to gain from the auction of coal blocks and the clean Ganga campaign.

"PM agreed that West Bengal is under maximum debt and has shown financial discipline despite this. PM assured us he would look into it," Banerjee told reporters after the meeting.

The meeting took place on the day the BJP-led NDA government tabled the  Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha.

The bill is being opposed by almost all opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress, who describe it as "anti-farmer".

This was for the first time that Banerjee met Modi after he assumed office as Prime Minister.

She was accompanied by a delegation, including West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra.

Banerjee  had sought the appointment with the PM.On Sunday Banerjee said she  would seek waiving of interests on the state's debts.
