Meerut on edge after report of gangrape, forced conversion
The 20-year-old woman alleged that she was gang-raped after her abduction by Nawab Khan, who is the headman of her village, along with five others.
The woman claimed that she was confined in a madrasa in Muzaffarnagar for five days till she managed to flee. She was also forced to be converted to the religion of her tormentors.
The accused Nawab Khan along with two other women were arrested. Police are on the look out for more accused in the case.
Ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said strong action would be taken in the case while opposition also stepped up demand for punishment of the guilty.
"The government should take it seriously," said Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief and former UP chief minister Mayawati.
The woman was reportedly missing since July 30 but villagers alleged that police did not take action to trace her.
With UP witnessing communal violence in the recent times, including deaths and injuries in Muzaffarnagar area, the incident has created an undercurrent of tension.
Heavy contingent of policemen were deployed in Kharkhadua area of Meerut.
