Meghalaya: GNLA leader killed in encounter

Guwahati, May 8 (IBNS): A top leader of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was killed in an encounter with security forces in North Garo Hills district in Meghalaya on Thursday night, officials said on Friday.
Based on intelligence input generated by Gajraj Military Intelligence, army and police launched joint operation at Chidareth Village under Mendipathar Police Station of North Garo Hills District of Meghalaya on Thursday night where a top GNLA commander self styled Lieutenant Sanjay alias Gobat resident of Ring Ring under Mendipathar Police Station of North Garo Hills District was killed in a gun fight.
 
Defence spokesman based in Guwahati said that, Sanjay had become an personification of terror in the region and the innocent civil population was terrorized by his acts of senseless violence and high demand for extortion.
 
“The operatives of Gajraj Military Intelligence were tracking the terrorist since a considerable time and on confirmation of his presence in the area got the successful operation launched leading to decimation of the dreaded terrorist,” the defence spokesman said.
 
Security forces had recovered a 7.62mm pistol and large quantity of ammunition from the deceased terrorist.
