Meghalaya : Mob attacked police station, damaged several vehicles, curfew imposed

Guwahati, July 23 (IBNS): Situation at Mahendraganj area in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district along Indo-Bangladesh border is still tense after a mob of over 400 people attacked the Mahendraganj police station and damaged several government vehicles, properties after rumours of a mentally challenged man being shot dead by police.

The mob had attacked the police station on Monday and damaged several police vehicles, government properties.

The angry mob also tried to set the police station on fire.

The agitated mob dispersed after police fired a few rounds in the air.

In view of the violent situation, the South West Garo Hills district administration imposed Section 144 CrPC in the area.

According to the reports, the Mahendraganj police received a call from residents on July 21 that a mentally challenged man wielding a dao (knife) and trying to attack people.

When the police team reached the spot, the man also tried to attack the police and a police constable fell into the flood waters.

As the police constable was trying to get up, the mentally challenged man snatched his Insas rifle and began pointing the gun towards the rest of the police team.

When the mentally challenged man refused to drop the Insas rifle, a police officer fired a shot in the air and the man ran away with the weapon into the darkness and was not found.

The police team searched for the man throughout the night to recover the Insas rifle.

When the search operation was going on, rumours spread out that the mentally challenged man was killed by police and his body hidden.

Following the rumours, the mob had attacked the police station.

South West Garo Hills district Superintendent of Police Rithuraj Ravi said that, the situation is now under control and all this was happened only because of rumours.
