"Militancy claimed over 2400 lives in Assam since 2001"

Guwahati, Aug 4 (IBNS) : Militancy has claimed more than 2400 lives, including security personnel, in Assam since 2001, Assam state assembly said on Monday.

Replying to a query during the Question Hour in the Assam Legislative Assembly, state Forest and Environment Minister Rockybul Hussain said that since 2001 to March, 2014 a total of 2,094 civilians were killed in insurgency related incidents in the state.

On the behalf of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who also holds the Home Department, Rockybul Hussain said during this period a total of 306 security personnel have been killed.

“During the period 4,767 civilians and 752 security personnel were injured in the insurgency related incidents in the state,” Hussain said.

“The overall situation in the state has improved since 2001 but some incidents happened in some areas and not in entire state,” Hussain said.

On other hand nearly 20 percent posts of the Assam Police is lying vacant at present.

Replying a query by Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) MLA Keshab Mahanta during the Question Hour in the state assembly, which begun on Monday, the state Forest minister said that, 14,356 posts were vacant out of 75,559 sanctioned posts in the Assam police department.

Rockybul Hussain also said that, a total of 1,22,544 different types of crimes including incidents against women, kidnapping, murder had  taken place in the state since 2001.
