Mizoram election : 49% turnout till 1 pm
Aizawl, Nov 28 (IBNS) : Brisk polling is underway in 40 assembly constituencies of Mizoram with 49 per cent of 7.70 lakh voters already casting their votes till 1 pm to elect a new government in the Christian- dominated north eastern state.
The voting began at 7 am amid tight security and will continue till 4 pm.
A total of 7,70,395 voters, including 3,94,897 women will decide the fate of 209 candidates, including five- time Chief Minister of the state and Congress candidate Lal Thanhawla and former Chief Minister and opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) nominee Zoramthanga.
Authorities have arranged transportation facilities for over 11 thousands Bru people, living in Tripura , to travel to Mizoram and cast their votes.
Fifteen temporary polling stations have been set up for 11,987 Bru refugee voters at Kanhmun village in Mamit district.
Till 11 am, 664 Bru refugee voters cast their votes.
Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ashish Kundra said ,“All facilities have been provided to the Bru refugee voters in the polling stations.
Following ethnic clashes in Mizoram, several thousand of Bru people were forced to leave the state and take shelter in Tripura since 1997.
40 companies of Central Armed Police Forces, in addition to the state police, have been deployed at 1,179 polling stations to ensure free and fair polls.
