New Delhi, Jan 7 (IBNS) : In a significant decision ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls  the Union Cabinet on Monday approved 10 per cent reservation for economically backward upper castes, CNBC Awaaz reported.

According to initial information, those earning less than Rs 8 lakh per annum would be eligible for the proposed quota.

The move is likely to invoke strong reactions from Dalit intellectuals and opposition parties such as the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party, Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party and the Left parties.

The government will move the Constitutional Amendment Bill on Tuesday for the reservation and is likely to extend the Winter Session for the same by two days.

Details are still awaited.
