Monsoon to hit Kerala by June 5

| | May 16, 2014, at 04:27 am
New Delhi, May 5 (IBNS): The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday forecast that the South-West Monsoon will hit the Kerala coast by June 5.
The Monsoon usually sets in over Kerala around June 1.

"The southwest monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on 5th June with a model error of ± 4 days. The normal date of onset of monsoon over Kerala is 1st June," the IMD said in a statement.

"Advance of southwest monsoon over Andaman Sea normally takes place around 20th May with a standard deviation of about one week. Low level cross equatorial monsoon flow has started appearing over south of Andaman Sea and adjoining south Bay of Bengal. During the last few days, considerable increase in the rainfall activity over the Bay of Bengal has also been observed," the statement said.

"The cross equatorial flow is likely to strengthen and deepen, which in turn would lead to further increase in the rainfall activity over the area. As a result, monsoon is likely to advance over Andaman Sea during next three days. Past data suggests absence of any one to one association of the date of monsoon advance over Andaman Sea with the date of monsoon onset over Kerala or that with the seasonal monsoon rainfall over the country," it said.
