Mumbai hostage-taker dies after sustaining injury in retaliatory firing by police
Mumbai: Rohit Arya, the man, who took 17 children hostage at a studio in Mumbai’s Powai area, has died after being injured in a fire exchange with police, media reports said.
According to an NDTV report, the police said Arya first shot at police with a fire gun when the police were conducting the rescue operation.
As a result, the police were forced to retaliate with one round of fire, in which Arya received an injury.
He was rushed to a hospital but died during treatment, the report added, quoting police.
The tense confrontation unfolded inside a small film studio named RA Studios, where Arya had enticed a group of children under the pretext of holding an “audition”.
According to the police, the children, aged between 8 and 14, were kept hostage for several hours before being rescued without injuries.
Officials said a team from the Powai Police Station responded to a distress call around 1:45 pm and rushed to the spot.
Negotiations were initiated right away, but Arya refused to let the children go.
When he threatened to harm them, officers broke in through the bathroom and rescued all 17 children unharmed.
