Muslim man helps Hindu woman in labour reach hospital during curfew
Guwahati, May 16 (IBNS): On May 12, 27-year-old Rubon Das prayed to the God for help because he was unable to get any conveyance to help ferry his pregnant wife to the hospital during the curfew in Assam's Hailakandi district.
Following the massive mob violence in May 10, the Hailakandi district administration had been forced to impose curfew in the district.
No 108 ambulance or other services were available to take his wife Nandita from Rajyeshwarpur Part-1 Tilagaon village to the SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi town, about 10km from his house.
Finally, 32-year-old Maqbool Hussain Laskar, an autorickshaw driver, came to his help.
On May 12 afternoon, 22-year-old Nandita delivered a healthy baby boy and family has named the infant ‘Shanti’.
Rubon said: “I and my wife took the decision that our newborn baby’s name would be Shanti. My brother (Maqbool) had helped so much to carry my wife to hospital at that situation.”
Hailakandi district deputy commissioner Keerthi Jalli had visited Rubon Das’s wife home on May 14 and felicitated the trio.
“We received an information that, a child was born at the hospital on May 12 and there was no vehicle to carry the newborn baby with mother and other family members from the hospital to their home while the curfew was going on. But, Maqbool Hussain Laskar (Rubon Das’s friend) had taken own risk and carried the baby with mother to their home from the hospital around 5:30 pm and he had also carried Rubon’s wife to the hospital before that. While the curfew was going on, a Muslim man risked his life and helped his friend. I am very happy for it. We need more such helpful people in our district. So I visited his home and felicitated them,” Keerthi Jalli said.
One person was killed and 14 others injured during mob violence in Hailakandi town on May 10 following a dispute over the two religious groups when some people protested against Friday prayers on a road in front of a mosque, located at Kali Bari point in the southern Assam town.
Following the incident the district administration had been forced to impose curfew entire the district and army was also called to maintain law and order situation.
