Nation recognises the services and sacrifices of Indian armed forces as part of Independence day celebrations

The duo Salim-Sulaiman had released a video titled Mera Desh Hi Dharam as a tribute to the Indian armed forces.

Appreciating their effort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, tweeted in reply, "Lovely rendition @salim_merchant Bhai and @Sulaiman Bhai. You convey a very strong message through the video. #MeraDeshHiDharam."

From India's cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar to actor Akshay Kumar, many have taken to social media to express their views.

Paying tribute to the Indian armed forces, tweeted Akshay Kumar, "They gave their tomorrow for our today...A lot has been done but a lot still needs to be done."

Along with it, he posted a picture that says, "Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it, flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it."

Tweeted cricketer Mohammad Kaif, "Proud to b born in this great land.May our flag always keep flying high.Tributes to all who made our freedom possible."

But the toast of the day remained the flood-hit people of Assam, especially the school children who did not let the waters prevent them from celebrating the day.

Sometime standing in the deep waters, sometimes using a boat as a platform, they raised the Indian Flag and held various programmes, according to media reports.
