NDA has majority in Rajya Sabha: Kiren Rijiju slams opposition for bringing no-confidence motion against Dhankar

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday countered the Congress and its allies over moving a no-confidence motion against Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar and said opponents have 'disrespected' the dignity of the Chair.

"The opposition has disrespected the dignity of the Chair," Rijiju told reporters.

"The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is like our guide. We need to follow the instructions of the person who sits on that Chair," he said.

"We respect Jagdeep Dhankar and he always guides us," he said.

Rijiju condemned the opposition for bringing the notice against the Rajya Sabha Chairman.

He said the NDA shares the majority in the Upper House.

"The NDA has the majority and we have total faith on the Chairman," he said.

The opposition alliance, led by the Congress, on Tuesday moved a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, alleging partisan function of the house.

This was the first time such an incident occurred in the Indian Parliament.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh posted on X: "For the first time in the 72-year history of the Rajya Sabha, Opposition Parties have formally submitted a no-confidence motion against the Chairman."

"ALL parties belonging to the INDIA group have had no option but to formally submit a no-confidence motion against the learned Hon'ble Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for the extremely partisan manner in which he has been conducting the proceedings of the Council of States. It has been a very painful decision for the INDIA parties to take, but in the interests of parliamentary democracy they have had to take this step," he said.
