NDFB attacks trigger ethnic violence in Assam, 5 more die

Guwahati, Dec 24 (IBNS) : At least five people were killed in Assam in fresh violence reported on Wednesday even as the death toll in the National Democratic Front of Bodoland - Songbijit (NDFB-S) attack in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur district rose to 62, taking the total number of people killed in the cycle of savagery to 67.

At least three people were killed and several injured, including five journalists, in Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district in police firing on protesters.

More than two thousand people came out at Dhekiajuli and protested against Tuesday's killings. The protesters had gheraoed the Dhekiajuli police station and demanded security to villagers.

The situation turned violent when police resorted to lathi charge and firing on protesters, killing three people.

On the other hand suspected miscreants killed at least two Bodo community people in Chiang district on Wednesday morning. During the attack, three others were injured.

In separate incident protesters set ablaze at least 90 houses at Udalguri weekly market. At least 19 protesters were injured in police firing incident at Udalguri.

District administration had imposed curfew in Kokrajhar, Sonitpur, Chiang, Baska and Udalguri districts.

Assam CM Tarun Gogoi has called a high level security meeting in Guwahati.

The NDFB is an armed separatist outfit which seeks to obtain a sovereign Bodoland for the Bodo people in Assam, India. It is designated as a terrorist organization by the Government of India
