Never directed to link mobile phone numbers with Aadhaar: Supreme Court

New Delhi, Apr 26 (IBNS): Amid the rush of people to link their mobile phone numbers with Aadhaar, the 12-digit unique identification number, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said it had never passed a directive of mandatory linkage, media reports said.

The top court has also blamed the central government for misinterpreting its Feb 5 observation and forcing people to link mobile numbers with Aadhaar.

Judge DY Chandrachud has been quoted by The Times Of India, "In the Lokniti Foundation case, the SC has not directed linking of SIM with UID. But the Union government’s circular says so. There was no direction by the court..."

The bench, which was led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, highlighted that the apex court on Feb 6 just recorded the submission of Attorney General Muku Rohatgi, who said Aadhaar was one of the documents compulsory for verification of users' identity.

The Supreme Court in March had extended the deadline of linkage of Aadhaar with mobile phone numbers, banking services and insurance indefinitely.

The top court has however exempted the linkage of Aadhaar with social welfare schemes and subsidies provided by government from the indefinite deadline.

The apex court is yet to hear on the validation of Aadhaar card.
