New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday re-registered a case in connection with the killing of a tailor in Udaipur who had praised a former BJP spokesperson whose comments on Prophet Mohammad triggered widespread condemnation.

The latest development came after the Home Ministry asked the NIA to take over the probe from the Rajasthan Police.

“NIA has registered a case under Sections 452, 302, 153 (A), 153 (B), 295 (A) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 16, 18 and 20 of UA(P)Act, 1967 against the accused who have conspired, planned and committed the heinous murder of Kanhaiya Lal on Tuesday,” the agency said in a statement.

The NIA said the case was initially registered at a police station in Udaipur district.

“Pursuant to the registration of the case, NIA teams have already reached Udaipur and requisite action for expeditious investigation of the case has already been initiated,” the agency said.

Both the men who murdered the tailor were arrested by the Rajasthan Police within hours of the crime.
