Noted danseuse Mrinalini Sarabhai passes away

Ahmedabad, Jan 21 (IBNS): Ending a chapter in Indian dance history, noted danseuse and Padma Bhushan recipient Mrinalini Sarabhai passed away here on Thursday.

She was 97 when death came.

Her daughter Mallika Sarabhai posted on her Facebook page: "My mother Mrinalini Sarabhai has just left for her eternal dance."

Mrinalini Sarabhai was born on May 11, 1918.

She was the founder director of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, an institute for imparting training in dance, drama, music and puppetry, in the city of Ahmedabad.

Gujarat CM Anandibehen Patel tweeted: "A noted danseuse & wife of Late Shri Vikram Sarabhai, Smt Mrinalini Sarabhai’s demise is saddening. May her soul rest in peace!"

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi too mourned the death of the danseuse.

"Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi has expressed deep condolences on passing away of noted danseuse & cultural icon Smt Mrinalini Sarabhai," the Congress tweeted.
