Nothing will save Modi from Rafale: Rahul Gandhi after Alok Verma reinstated as CBI chief
New Delhi, Jan 8 (IBNS): Linking the Centre's earlier decision to remove CBI chief Alok Verma with the pot-boiling Rafale issue, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said nothing will save Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the alleged scam in the deal of buying of 36 fighter jets by India from France.
Rahul made the comment as the Supreme Court on Tuesday quashed the Centre's decision and reinstated Verma as the CBI chief but without the power to take policy decisions for now.
Interacting with media, Rahul said: "Nothing is going to save Modi from Rafale because it is a truth. Lets see what happens now. Evidence of Rafale is open and shut. It is clear that Anil Ambani got Rs. 30,000 crore."
"I ask the Centre to state when Modi bypassed the deal. Did defence ministry object to it? The nation is going to know 100 percent that Modi took Rs. 30,000 crore from people and gave it to Ambani," he added.
The Supreme Court has said it is the Selection Committee, which is constituted by the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India and leader of the single largest opposition party, can take the decision. The Selection Panel has been directed to meet within a week from now and take a call.
Backdrop of the Centre's move:
The CBI chief was sent on leave in October after he was caught in the middle of a case revolving around Verma and his deputy Rakesh Asthana swapping bribe charges.
The fight between the number one and two of the CBI took a big form after Asthana had alleged that Verma took a bribe from Hyderabad businessman Sathish Babu Sana. Sana had allegedly paid Rs. 2 crore to protect himself from Moin Qureshi case.
However, Asthana rubbished the charges saying it was hurled against him owing to a conspiracy between the accuser and some CBI and Enforcement Directorate officers.
Along with Verma, the Centre had sent Asthana on leave as well.
In absence of Verma, the Centre had appointed Indian Police Service (IPS) officer M Nageswara Rao as the CBI's interim chief. But Rao was barred by the top court from taking any policy decisions.
