Berhampur, May 18 (UNI) Additional District and Sessions judge Sanjaya Sahu today sentenced top Maoist leader Sanjaya Panda to life imprisonment for waging war against the government.

The judge convicted the Maoist leader under section 121 of the IPC while discharging him from section 124 of the IPC (unlawful activities).

Mr.Panda was arrested by the police in the midnight of July 17, 2014 from a rented house at Mangalbarpeta sahi in Berhampur during a raid and since then lodged in te circle jail of Berhumpur.

As many as 135 cases have been filed against the Maoist leader and he has been so far acquitted in 52 cases by the court.

The Maoist leader’s counsel Deepak Patnaik when contacted said his client will challenge the judgment in the High Court in the ground that the judge has not applied his judicial mind in the case.

He said the judge had censured the police and the prosecution for failing to produce proper evidence relating to this case and ordered that a copy of the judgment be sent to the Director General of Police and the Superintendent of Police, Berhumpur.

The Maoist leader was active mainly in Southern Odisha .
