Opposition candidates to file nominations for Bengal panchayat poll today

Kolkata, Apr 23 (IBNS): The opposition candidates are likely to file nominations for the Bengal panchayat poll after the State Election Commission's (SEC's) extension of deadline by a day following the directive of the Calcutta High Court.

However, candidates who have already withdrawn their names from the poll, cannot file afresh on Monday.

The SEC has allowed the candidates to file nominations between 11 am and 3 pm on Monday.

The single bench of Calcutta High Court last week directed the SEC to extend the nomination filing deadline by a day after hearing the case in which the opposition parties- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Left- had alleged the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) to resort to violence to hinder the rival political outfits from filing their nominations.

The Trinamool-ruled state government had refrained itself from challenging the High Court's verdict in the division bench considering the delay in the poll process which already has occurred.

The High Court has directed the SEC to issue a fresh date for the poll, which was earlier scheduled to be held on May 1, 3 and 5.

Ever since the poll dates have been announced by the SEC, the eastern state has witnessed widespread violence by the TMC and emerging principal opposition, the BJP.

Panchayat poll in the state is significant as it is considered to be crucial for the General Elections, which will be held next in 2019.
