Opposition slams central government on Dalit issue

Ahmedabad/Una, Jul 20 (IBNS): The Rajya Sabha temporarily adjourned on Wednesday as members of the Opposition stormed the well to protest against the stripping and beating of four Dalit men by self-styled cow protectors in Gujarat last week, according to media reports.

Meanwhile the Dalit Panther Party has called for a state-wide bandh in Gujarat on Wednesday.

BSP chief Mayawati has claimed that nobody brings up 'Dalit issues' excepting her party, the media reported. She also said that the attack on Dalits in Gujarat is 'shameful'. She also questioned the intent of the Congress party, questioning why the party in Gujarat has remained silent over the issue.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that the attack on Dalits in Una is an organised crime, media reported. She tweeted, "Incident in Una is organised crime against Dalits. I urge Central Govt to treat Dalits with care & give full protection.This is unacceptable."

Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel is visiting Una on Wednesday to meet the victims and their families. She has also appealed for peace. On Tuesday, she tweeted, "I appeal to Dalit youth to not resort to desperate measures like attempting suicide & assure them that govt is with Una victims."

On Tuesday, Gujarat Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs four lakhs to each of the four Dalit victims as well as medical treatment.

"We are taking strong action against the accused," she said on Tuesday,media reported.

Rahul Gandhi is expected to visit Una on Thursday and Arvind Kejriwal  on Friday, media reported.
