Parliament: Rajya Sabha witnesses multiple adjournments
New Delhi/UNI: The Rajya Sabha witnessed multiple adjournments on Wednesday as opposition members raised the issue of last week’s Parliament security breach demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Expressing his concern over continuous commotion in the House and an opposition MP making a mimicry of him, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said he would not tolerate any insult to the Vice-president's chair.
"No matter how much you insult Jagdeep Dhankhar, I don’t care, but if you insult me as a Vice President of India, the farmer community and my class I will not tolerate this.
"I will make full sacrifice but I will not tolerate that I could not protect the dignity of my post. It is my duty to protect the dignity of this House," he said.
When the House resumed after an adjournment for Question Hour, all ruling party members decided to take part in the proceedings while standing.
"We will stand and observe silence for the entire hour and participate in Question Hour," Prahlad Joshi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, said.
Joshi said they will remain standing up in a show of respect to the Chairman because a person holding a constitutional post was insulted on Tuesday. He said India will not tolerate the insult of the Vice President.
Later, the House was adjourned till 2 PM as opposition members continued to protest.
