Islamabad/New Delhi/IBNS: Pakistan's new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday returned PM Narendra Modi's greetings on his selection as the country's leader, mentioning its "sacrifices" in fighting terrorism and that disputes over Jammu and Kashmir should be settled peacefully.

PM Modi had congratulated Sharif on Twitter after the latter's win and reiterated his desire for "peace and stability" in the region.

"Congratulations to H. E. Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on his election as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. India desires peace and stability in a region free of terror, so that we can focus on our development challenges and ensure the well-being and prosperity of our people," PM Modi had tweeted.

In response, Shehbaz Sharif wrote: "Thank you Premier Narendra Modi for felicitations. Pakistan desires peaceful & cooperative ties with India. Peaceful settlement of outstanding disputes including Jammu & Kashmir is indispensable. Pakistan's sacrifices in fighting terrorism are well-known. Let's secure peace and focus on socio-economic development of our people."

Shehbaz Sharif was elected as the 23rd PM of Pakistan on Monday, starting a new political chapter in the history of the nation.

He was elected as the PM after 174 lawmakers voted in his favour as Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf MNAs boycotted the election.

The development in Pakistan politics followed two days after Imran Khan's tenure as PM of Pakistan ended through a no-confidence vote.
