Peter Mukerjea granted bail in Sheena Bora murder case

Mumbai/IBNS: The Bombay High Court on Thursday granted bail to media tycoon Peter Mukerjea in connection with the Sheena Bora murder case, media reports said.

The court has observed that prima facie there is no evidence against Mukerjea to prove his involvement in the crime.

"When the incident took place, the applicant (Peter Mukerjea) was not in India. The trial in the case is already underway. The applicant is in jail since over four years and has recently undergone bypass surgery," Justice Sambre was quoted as saying in the media reports.

"Except for statement of the approver in the case, Shyamwar Rai, there is no reference to Peter Mukerjea in any evidence. There is no other evidence to show his involvement in the conspiracy," the court said.

Mukerjea was granted bail by Justice Nitin Sambre on a surety of Rs two lakh.

He has been also directed to not contact his children Rahul Mukerjea and Vidhi Mukerjea and other witnesses in the case.

The court, however, stayed its order for a period of six weeks paving the way for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file an appeal.

The CBI on Nov 19, 2015, arrested Peter Mukerjea in connection with the murder case of Sheena Bora, in which his wife Indrani Mukerjea is accused.

Indrani Mukerjea was arrested two months ago and has been in a Mumbai jail since Sept 7, 2015.

Sheena Bora was murdered allegedly by her mother Indrani Mukerjea and two others.  Her previous husband Sanjeev Khanna is also an accused in the crime.

Tests had confirmed that the 24-year-old  was strangled.

The remains were found in the Raigad forest, 80 km from Mumbai in August leading to the arrest of Indrani and two others.

The Mumbai police had in September said DNA tests proved that the remains, a skull and bone pieces, were of  Bora.

The case had since been handed over to the CBI.
