PM Modi calls launch of South Asia Satellite 'historic'

New Delhi, May 5 (IBNS): In his first address following the successful launch of the South Asia Satellite,Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called the moment as 'historic'.

"Today is a historic day for South Asia," Modi said.

He said: "A promise to extend the advanced space technology for the cause of growth and prosperity of our brothers and sisters in South Asia."

Modi said :"With this launch we have started a journey to build the most advanced frontier of our partnership."

As leaders of other south Asian nations, including Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, joined the launch celebration, Modi thanked said :"Grateful to fellow leaders from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives & Sri Lanka for joining me to celebrate this launch."

"Our coming together is a sign of our unshakeable resolve to place the needs of our peoples in the forefront," he said.

"Through this we will achieve effective communication, better governance, better banking services & better education in remote areas," he said.

He said space technology will touch the lives of our people in the region.

Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani joined the video conference and saidtThrough this cooperation, we have to work for the poor and the deprived.

"Development must be citizen centric," he said.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina congratulated Indian government over the successful launch of the satellite.

"Betterment of our people can happen through fruitful engagement," Hasina said.

Nepal PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal said the satellite will be helpful to provide communication services in the mountain and hilly regions of Nepal

"We extend hearty congratulations to PM Modi and Government of India. This will enhance connectivity," he said.

Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgaysaid: "Launch of the South Asia satellite historic moment for the world, it ushers in a new era of regional cooperation."

Creating history and carrying a 450-crore communications satellite, the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle or GSLV lifted off from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on Friday and was launched successfully.

The satellite has been gifted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to  six South Asian countries.
