PM Modi meets Jayalalithaa over lunch, seeks support for GST bill

Chennai, Aug 7(IBNS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's support for GST bill at a lunch meeting in her Poes Gardens residence on Friday, opening the gate for a strategic alliance with the AIADMK, a regional powerhouse, reports said.

It was the first meeting between the two leaders after Jayalalithaa's acquittal in the disproportionate assets case.

The meeting is  significant  in the backdrop of NDA's efforts to garner support for its key economic reforms bills in Parliament which has been in a logjam for more than a fortnight following opposition agitation over Lalit Modi issue and the Vyapam scam.

Jayalalithaa, who returned as Chief Minister in May this year after the Karnataka High Court absolved her of the charge of amassing disproportionate assets, invited Modi for the lunch which the Prime Minister accepted.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister first launched the National Handloom Day celebrations at the University of Madras and then drove straight to the Chief Minister's residence where she  welcomed him at the doorstep.

Jayalalithaa's AIADMK had won 37 of the state's 39 seats, making it the third-largest contingent of lawmakers in the Lok Sabha, only seven less than national party Congress.  AIADMK has 11 members in the Upper House, where the ruling NDA is significantly in the minority and faces trouble in getting bills passed.
