PM Modi pays tribute to Col Nizamuddin, says demise saddening

New Delhi, Feb 7 (IBNS): Mourning the death of Colonel Nizamuddin, the last known member of the Azad Hind Fauj or Indian National Army, Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the incident as saddening.

Modi took to Twitter to pay tribute to centenarian, who served as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's driver and bodyguard.

"Tributes to Subhas Babu's close associate, Colonel Nizamuddin. I recall my meeting with him. His demise is saddening," the Prime Minister's tweet read.

"We will always remember the idealism, courage & patriotism of Colonel Nizamuddin, which added strength to our freedom struggle," a subsequent tweet added.

Colonel Nizamuddin hit the headlines last year when he opened a bank account at the age of 116 years.

He was living in Dhakwa village in Mubarakpur area in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, with his wife and youngest son.
