New Delhi: Indian president Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday wished the nation on Raksha Bandhan.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind posted: "Greetings on Raksha Bandhan! Rakhi is the sacred thread of love and trust that connects sisters with brothers in a special bond. On this day, let us reiterate our commitment to secure the honour and dignity of women."

"Wish countrymen on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan," read a translation of Modi's tweet in Hindi.

Amid COVID-19 pandemic spread, India is observing Raksha Bandhan on Monday.

It is a popular, traditionally Hindu, annual rite, or ceremony, which is central to a festival of the same name, celebrated in India, Nepal and other parts of the Indian subcontinent, and among people around the world influenced by Hindu culture.

On this day, sisters of all ages tie a talisman, or amulet, called the rakhi or raksha, around the wrists of their brothers, symbolically protecting them, receiving a gift in return, and traditionally investing the brothers with a share of the responsibility of their potential care.
