Police arrest two government officials in connection with multi-crore rupees Land Ports scam in Assam's Karimganj

Guwahati, June 23 (IBNS): Assam police have arrested two officials of Karimganj district circle office in connection with a multi-crore rupees scam involving for acquiring land for Land Ports Authority of India’s project under the Ministry of Home Affairs at Sutarkandi in Karimganj district along Indo-Bangladesh border. 

Based on FIRs lodged by several people, Karimganj district police registered 26 cases at Karimganj police station and conducted a raid at Karimganj circle office and arrested two officials.

According to the reports, for the Land Ports Authority of India’s project at Sutarkandi along Indo-Bangladesh border, the government had acquired land from different persons.

The scam relates to siphoning of several crore rupees meant for providing compensation to those whose lands were acquired by the government.

Some officials of Karimganj district had siphoned compensation money by doctoring documents of the land owners and the actual land owners were deprived to get the compensation money.

Police have arrested two government officials and seized various documents, files.

“The lands were acquired by the government for the project of International trade centre at Sutarkandi. Various anomalies took place in there. 26 number of cases were registered at Karimganj police station following FIRs lodged by various land owners who yet to get the compensation money. We had arrested two officials in connection with the scam,” a police officer said.
