Police disperse Delhi protesters against church attack
New Delhi, Feb 5 (IBNS) Police dispersed a large number of people outside the Sacred Heart Cathedral in New Delhi who were agitating against recent attacks on churches across the national capital.
Police in large number were present at the venue of the protest where many had gathered particularly to protest peacefully the latest attack on a church in Vasant Kunj which the police dubbed a case of robbery.
The protesters said if the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is so strong a leader, he should be able to protect the minority too.
Police called the protest as unlawful and forced many of the protesters in buses and thus detained them.
Some church members were also pulled and forces into buses. Many, including clerics, were dragged away. Church leaders said it is a shame on the police to have acted on a peaceful protest like that.
Members of the St Alphonsa's Church in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj said some miscreants on Monday last had jumped the wall and broke opened the main gate and ransacked the sacred belongings of the church in the wee hours.
While police reached the spot and started investigating the matter reportedly as a case of robbery first, the church officials had said they are clueless what led to the attack and who were behind it. However, they felt it was a case of attack on their religion.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday said it has issued notices to the Secretary, Union Home Ministry, Chief Secretary, Government of NCT of Delhi and the Commissioner of Police seeking reports on the status of investigation into the alleged vandalism of the church in south Delhi.
The NHRC has given 10 days time to give its report on the issue.
