Pregnant Delhi riot-accused Safoora Zargar gets bail after govt agrees on 'humanitarian grounds'

New Delhi/IBNS: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted bail to student activist Safoora Zargar who is accused of conspiring a riot in the national capital in Feb 2020, media reports said.

The bail has been granted to the M.Phil student of Jamia Millia University, who is four months pregnant, after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta agreed to the same on the "humanitarian grounds".

The court, which has granted the bail on a personal bond of Rs. 10,000, said Safoora will have to take permission from the court before leaving Delhi and will have to get in touch with the investigating officer every 15 days.

Safoora, who has been charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), was arrested on Apr 10.

The earlier bail plea of Safoora was rejected by the trial court on Jun 4.

How the riot took place?

The Delhi 2020 riot took place in the northeastern part of the national capital in the last week of February, leaving more than 50 people from both Hindu and Muslim communities dead.

The riot had started from Jaffrabad where a sit-in-protest by women against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2020, was progressing along the stretch of Seelampur-Jaffrabad-Maujpur road.
