New Delhi, June 20 (IBNS): President Ram Nath Kovind addressed a joint parliamentary session, which was attended by both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, on Thursday.

Kovind lauded a number of initiatives undertaken by the central government.

"We all know what was the situation of the country before 2014. But the new government took steps to make a new India," the President said.

Also he said the people of the country posed faith in the government's works after five years.

"The 17th Lok Sabha elections were a referendum on the government and they posed greater faith in the government," Kovind said.

Also the President highlighted the increased participation of women in the electoral process in 2019.

He congratulated the elected MPs as well as new Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

In the 2019 General Elections, the BJP registered a massive victory by winning 303 seats while the main opposition party Congress could get only 52.
