President Ram Nath Kovind gives Nari Shakti Puraskar on International Women's Day

New Delhi/IBNS: President Ram Nath Kovind presented Nari Shakti Puraskar on the occasion of International Women’s Day at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre (RBCC) on Sunday. 

The Nari Shakti Puraskar, instituted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, are "National Award in recognition of exceptional work for women empowerment" conferred every year on March 8 as a mark of respect and recognition for those who have demonstrated exemplary courage and stellar contribution towards empowerment of women.

The recipients of the award are: Farmer and rural woman entrepreneur Padala Bhudevi of Andhra Pradesh, 'Mushroom Mahila’ Bina Devi of Bihar, Numdha handicrafts reviver Arifa Jan of Jammu & Kashmir, environmentalist Chami Murmu of Jharkhand, entrepreneur and Ladakhi culinary specialist Nilza Wangmo of Ladakh, automotive and r&d professional Rashmi Urdhwardesh of Maharashtra, Mann Kaur of Punjab who started her athletic career at 93 and has won several medals, lady mason Kalavati Devi of Uttar Pradesh, mountaineers Tashi and Nungshi Malik of Uttrakhand, classical singer Kaushiki Chakroborty of West Bengal, Indian Air Force pilots Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawanna Kanth and Mohana Singh Jitarwal and litercay champions Bhageerathi Amma and Karthyayini Amma of Kerala.

Before the award presentation ceremony, a special screening of ‘Swachh Bharat – India’s Sanitation Story’ was held at RBCC for the audience. This short film showcases the massive behaviour change that occurred across rural India under the Swachh Bharat Mission, and the role that women played in leading over 55 crore people to shun the age-old practice of open defecation.
