Prayagraj: The Prayagraj district administration has invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against businessman Javed Mohammad, one of the key accused in the June 10 violence over the derogatory remarks made against Prophet Mohammed by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, media reports said.

Javed and his daughter Afreen Fatima are prominent members of the city’s civil society and members of the Welfare Party of India.

Indian Express reported that the senior superintendent of police (Prayagraj) Shailesh Kumar Pandey has confirmed the invocation of NSA against Javed Mohammad.

Passed in 1980 by the Indira Gandhi government, this act empowers the Central Government and State Governments to detain a person to prevent him/her from acting in any manner prejudicial to the security of India, the relations of India with foreign countries, the maintenance of public order, or the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the community it is necessary so to do.

Prayagraj police arrested 54-year-old Javed Mohammad, alleging that he was one of the main conspirators after his role emerged during the interrogation of other accused.

The officers said Javed had called for a "bandh" and asked people to reach the spot of the incident through WhatsApp messages.

A day after his arrest, the Prayagraj administration demolished Javed's house citing evidence of violations of several norms following investigation over a complaint of "illegal construction" of his house.

Javed is currently lodged at the Deoria district jail.
