Punjab crisis: After Navjot Sidhu's shocker, speculations rife on Amarinder Singh's Delhi trip

New Delhi/IBNS: Navjot Singh Sidhu's resignation as the Congress President of Punjab unit not only came as a shocker on Tuesday but also raised eyeballs as it coincided with former state chief minister Amarinder Singh's trip to Delhi.

Amarinder Singh's trip to Delhi has raised furious speculation that he would meet with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Amit Shah and JP Nadda.

Singh, however, told reporters that he had come to the city only to vacate the Kapurthala Home for Charanjit Singh Channi, his successor.

"I will go home, collect my belongings, and return to Punjab tomorrow. I won't meet any politician, I am just here to vacate my home," he told reporters.

Refuting the speculation, Singh's aide had also tweeted the same.

"Too much being read into Captain Amarinder's visit to Delhi. He's on a personal visit, during which he'll meet some friends and also vacate Kapurthala house for the new Chief Minister. No need for any unnecessary speculation," tweeted Raveen Thukral.

In a new twist to the political drama in Punjab, Sidhu sent his resignation letter to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi.

Soon after the move, Amarinder Singh took a dig at his long-time rival and called Sidhu an unstable man and unfit for the border state.

In a tweet, Amarinder Singh said, "I told you so…he is not a stable man and not fit for the border state of punjab."

In his resignation letter, Sidhu wrote, "The collapse of a man's character stems from the compromise corner, I can never compromise on Punjab's future and the agenda for the welfare of Punjab.

"Therefore, I hereby resign as the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Will continue to serve the Congress."

This comes just days after Amarinder Singh resigned from the post of the chief minister in Punjab citing repeated "humiliation" by the party.

The Congress high command had been instrumental in appointing Sidhu as the Punjab unit supremo much against the will of then Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

Sidhu was apparently close to new Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, who replaced Amarinder Singh barely days ago.

According to reports, Sidhu was upset over a few recent appointments and cabinet reshuffling.

Now the situation once again turned ugly for the Punjab Congress as the state will head to assembly polls early 2022.
