Quota protests should not hit Delhi water supply: Centre directs Haryana
New Delhi, Feb 21 (IBNS): The Centre on Sunday asked the Haryana government to ensure that Delhi's water supply is not affected due to the Jat community stir, where protesters are demanding they be given government jobs under OBC quota, media reports said.
Delhi, after being bracing for a severe water crisis, has decided to shut down schools and government offices.
On Saturday night, the Delhi government moved the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre to intervene and ensure water supply.
With protests hitting the operations at the Munak Canal, around 60% of Delhi's water supply is expected to be effected.
Seven water treatment plants in Delhi have already shut down.
Even if the gates of the canal are opened now, it will take at least 24 hours to restore.
As a result it has been decided that all schools and government offices in Delhi will be shut for the day.
At least eight people have been killed and 78 others have been injured in Haryana as Jat community protesters, demanding they be given government jobs under OBC quota, continued their agitation for the eigth day on Sunday.
